2 Kings

Chapter 19

1 AND when King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD.

2 And he sent Eliakim, the steward of the household, and Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

3 And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of distress and of rebuke and of anger; for the children have come to the birth, and there is no strength in the mother to bring forth.

4 It may be the LORD your God will hear the words of the Rab-shakeh, whom his master, the Assyrian king has sent to reproach the living God; and will rebuke him for the words which the LORD your God has heard; therefore beseech and pray for the remnant that is left.

5 So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah the prophet.

6 And Isaiah said to them, Thus shall you say to your master: Thus says the LORD, Do not be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the ambassadors of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

8 So the Rab-shakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish.

9 And when he heard it said concerning Tarhak king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against you, he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,

10 Thus shall you say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hands of the king of Assyria.

11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lances by destroying them utterly; and shall you be delivered?

12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, such as Gozan, Haran, and Rezeph, and the inhabitants of Eden who were in Thelasar?

13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of Sepharvim, and of Dena, and Ivah?

14 And Hezekiah received the letters from the hand of the messengers, and read them; and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD and spread them before the LORD.

15 And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD and said, O LORD God of Israel, who sits upon the cherubim, thou art the God, even thou alone, over all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made the heaven and the earth.

16 O LORD, incline thine ear and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who hath sent messages to reproach the living God.

17 Of a truth, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,

18 And have burned their gods in fire; for they were no gods, but the works of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have burned them.

19 Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hands, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God, even thou alone.

20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says the LORD God of Israel: That which you have prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.

21 This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: The virgin the daughter of Zion despises you and laughs you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head behind you.

22 Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? And against whom have you raised your voices and lifted up your eyes on high? Even against the Holy One of Israel.

23 By your messengers you have reproached the LORD and have said, With the multitude of my chariots I will go up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof and the choice fir trees thereof; and I will enter into the extreme limits of the forest of Carmel.

24 I will dig and drink strange waters, and with the hoofs of my horses I will dry up all the great rivers.

25 Have you not heard long ago how I have done it, and of the days of old how I prepared it? And now I have brought it to pass, that you lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps;

26 Therefore their inhabitants became weak, they were defeated and confounded, and became like the grass of the field and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops, and like tender grass blasted before it is grown up.

27 But I know your dwelling place and your coming in and your going out and your rage against me.

28 Because you have dared and raged against me, and your blasphemy has come to my ears, therefore I will put a hook in your nose and a bit in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.

29 And this shall be a sign to you: you shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow and reap and plant vineyards and. eat the fruits thereof.

30 And the remnant that is left of the house of Judah shall increase, they shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward.

31 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of the mount of Zion; the zeal of the LORD Of hosts shall do this.

32 Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not enter this city nor shoot an arrow there nor come before it with shields nor lay an ambush against it.

33 But by the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not enter this city, says the LORD.

34 For I will abide in this city and save it for my own sake and for my servant David's sake.

35 And it came to pass that night, the angel of the LORD went out and slew in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when the survivors arose early in the morning, they looked, and behold, their comrades were all dead.

36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned and dwelt at Nineveh.

37 And as he worshipped in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammeleck and Sharezer his sons slew him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Sarhaddom his son reigned in his stead.

Chapter 19

1 And it came1961 to pass, when king4428 Hezekiah2396 heard8085 it, that he rent7167 his clothes,899 and covered3680 himself with sackcloth,8242 and went935 into the house1004 of the LORD.3068

2 And he sent7971 Eliakim,471 which834 was over5921 the household,1004 and Shebna7644 the scribe,5608 and the elders2205 of the priests,3548 covered3680 with sackcloth,8242 to Isaiah3470 the prophet5030 the son1121 of Amoz.531

3 And they said559 to him, Thus3541 said559 Hezekiah,2396 This2088 day3117 is a day3117 of trouble,6869 and of rebuke,8433 and blasphemy;5007 for the children1121 are come935 to the birth,4866 and there is not strength3581 to bring3205 forth.3205

4 It may194 be the LORD3068 your God430 will hear8085 all3605 the words1697 of Rabshakeh,7262 whom834 the king4428 of Assyria804 his master113 has sent7971 to reproach2778 the living2416 God;430 and will reprove3198 the words1697 which834 the LORD3068 your God430 has heard:8085 why lift5375 up your prayer8605 for the remnant7611 that are left.4672

5 So the servants5650 of king4428 Hezekiah2396 came935 to Isaiah.3470

6 And Isaiah3470 said559 to them, Thus3541 shall you say559 to your master,113 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 Be not afraid3372 of the words1697 which834 you have heard,8085 with which834 the servants5288 of the king4428 of Assyria804 have blasphemed1442 me.

7 Behold,2005 I will send5414 a blast7307 on him, and he shall hear8085 a rumor,8052 and shall return7725 to his own land;776 and I will cause him to fall5307 by the sword2719 in his own land.776

8 So Rabshakeh7262 returned,7725 and found4672 the king4428 of Assyria804 warring3898 against5921 Libnah:3841 for he had heard8085 that he was departed5265 from Lachish.3923

9 And when he heard8085 say559 of Tirhakah8640 king4428 of Ethiopia,3568 Behold,2009 he is come3318 out to fight3898 against you: he sent7971 messengers4397 again7725 to Hezekiah,2396 saying,559

10 Thus3541 shall you speak559 to Hezekiah2396 king4428 of Judah,3063 saying,559 Let not your God430 in whom834 you trust982 deceive5377 you, saying,559 Jerusalem3389 shall not be delivered5414 into the hand3027 of the king4428 of Assyria.804

11 Behold,2009 you have heard8085 what853 834 the kings4428 of Assyria804 have done6213 to all3605 lands,776 by destroying2763 them utterly: and shall you be delivered?5337

12 Have the gods430 of the nations1471 delivered5337 them which834 my fathers1 have destroyed;7843 as Gozan,1470 and Haran,2771 and Rezeph,7530 and the children1121 of Eden5731 which834 were in Thelasar?8515

13 Where346 is the king4428 of Hamath,2574 and the king4428 of Arpad,774 and the king4428 of the city5892 of Sepharvaim,5617 of Hena,2012 and Ivah?5755

14 And Hezekiah2396 received3947 the letter5612 of the hand3027 of the messengers,4397 and read7121 it: and Hezekiah2396 went5927 up into the house1004 of the LORD,3068 and spread6566 it before6440 the LORD.3068

15 And Hezekiah2396 prayed6419 before6440 the LORD,3068 and said,559 O LORD3068 God430 of Israel,3478 which dwell3427 between the cherubim,3742 you are the God,430 even you alone,905 of all3605 the kingdoms4467 of the earth;776 you have made6213 heaven8064 and earth.776

16 LORD,3068 bow5186 down5186 your ear,241 and hear:8085 open,6491 LORD,3068 your eyes,5869 and see:7200 and hear8085 the words1697 of Sennacherib,5576 which834 has sent7971 him to reproach2778 the living2416 God.430

17 Of a truth,551 LORD,3068 the kings4428 of Assyria804 have destroyed2717 the nations1471 and their lands,776

18 And have cast5414 their gods430 into the fire:784 for they were no3808 gods,430 but the work4639 of men's120 hands,3027 wood6086 and stone:68 therefore they have destroyed6 them.

19 Now6258 therefore, O LORD3068 our God,430 I beseech4994 you, save3467 you us out of his hand,3027 that all3605 the kingdoms4467 of the earth776 may know3045 that you are the LORD3068 God,430 even you only.905

20 Then Isaiah3470 the son1121 of Amoz531 sent7971 to Hezekiah,2396 saying,559 Thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel,3478 That which834 you have prayed6419 to me against413 Sennacherib5576 king4428 of Assyria804 I have heard.8085

21 This2088 is the word1697 that the LORD3068 has spoken1696 concerning5921 him; The virgin1330 the daughter1323 of Zion6726 has despised959 you, and laughed3932 you to scorn; the daughter1323 of Jerusalem3389 has shaken5128 her head7218 at you.

22 Whom853 4310 have you reproached2778 and blasphemed?1442 and against5921 whom4310 have you exalted7311 your voice,6963 and lifted5375 up your eyes5869 on high?4791 even against5921 the Holy6918 One of Israel.3478

23 By your messengers4397 you have reproached2778 the LORD,3068 and have said,559 With the multitude7393 of my chariots7393 I am come5927 up to the height4791 of the mountains,2022 to the sides3411 of Lebanon,3844 and will cut3772 down the tall6967 cedar730 trees thereof, and the choice4005 fir1265 trees thereof: and I will enter935 into the lodgings4411 of his borders,7093 and into the forest3293 of his Carmel.3760

24 I have dig5365 and drunk8354 strange2114 waters,4325 and with the sole3709 of my feet6471 have I dried2717 up all3605 the rivers2975 of besieged4693 places.

25 Have you not heard8085 long7350 ago7350 how I have done6213 it, and of ancient6924 times3117 that I have formed3335 it? now6258 have I brought935 it to pass, that you should be to lay waste7582 fenced1219 cities5892 into ruinous5327 heaps.1530

26 Therefore their inhabitants3427 were of small7116 power,3027 they were dismayed2865 and confounded;954 they were as the grass6212 of the field,7704 and as the green3419 herb,1877 as the grass2682 on the house tops,1406 and as corn blasted7711 before6440 it be grown7054 up.

27 But I know3045 your stayed,3427 and your going3318 out, and your coming935 in, and your rage7264 against413 me.

28 Because3282 your rage7264 against413 me and your tumult7600 is come5927 up into my ears,241 therefore I will put7760 my hook2397 in your nose,639 and my bridle4964 in your lips,8193 and I will turn7725 you back7725 by the way1870 by which834 you came.935

29 And this2088 shall be a sign226 to you, You shall eat398 this year8141 such things as grow5599 of themselves, and in the second8145 year8141 that which springs7823 of the same; and in the third7992 year8141 sow2232 you, and reap,7114 and plant5193 vineyards,3754 and eat398 the fruits6529 thereof.

30 And the remnant7604 that is escaped6413 of the house1004 of Judah3063 shall yet again3254 take root8328 downward,4295 and bear6213 fruit6529 upward.4605

31 For out of Jerusalem3389 shall go3318 forth3318 a remnant,7611 and they that escape6413 out of mount2022 Zion:6726 the zeal7068 of the LORD3068 of hosts shall do6213 this.2063

32 Therefore3651 thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 concerning413 the king4428 of Assyria,804 He shall not come935 into413 this2063 city,5892 nor3808 shoot3384 an arrow2671 there,8033 nor3808 come6923 before6924 it with shield,4043 nor cast8210 a bank5550 against5921 it.

33 By the way1870 that he came,935 by the same shall he return,7725 and shall not come935 into413 this2063 city,5892 said5002 the LORD.3068

34 For I will defend1598 this2063 city,5892 to save3467 it, for my own sake,4616 and for my servant5650 David's1732 sake.4616

35 And it came1961 to pass that night,3915 that the angel4397 of the LORD3068 went3318 out, and smote5221 in the camp4264 of the Assyrians804 an hundred3967 fourscore8084 and five2568 thousand:505 and when they arose7925 early7925 in the morning,1242 behold,2009 they were all3605 dead4191 corpses.6297

36 So Sennacherib5576 king4428 of Assyria804 departed,5265 and went3212 and returned,7725 and dwelled3427 at Nineveh.5210

37 And it came1961 to pass, as he was worshipping7812 in the house1004 of Nisroch5268 his god,430 that Adrammelech152 and Sharezer8272 his sons1121 smote5221 him with the sword:2719 and they escaped4422 into the land776 of Armenia.780 And Esarhaddon634 his son1121 reigned4427 in his stead.8478

1 AND when King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD.

1 And it came1961 to pass, when king4428 Hezekiah2396 heard8085 it, that he rent7167 his clothes,899 and covered3680 himself with sackcloth,8242 and went935 into the house1004 of the LORD.3068

2 And he sent Eliakim, the steward of the household, and Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

3 And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of distress and of rebuke and of anger; for the children have come to the birth, and there is no strength in the mother to bring forth.

4 It may be the LORD your God will hear the words of the Rab-shakeh, whom his master, the Assyrian king has sent to reproach the living God; and will rebuke him for the words which the LORD your God has heard; therefore beseech and pray for the remnant that is left.

5 So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah the prophet.

5 So the servants5650 of king4428 Hezekiah2396 came935 to Isaiah.3470

6 And Isaiah said to them, Thus shall you say to your master: Thus says the LORD, Do not be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the ambassadors of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

7 Behold,2005 I will send5414 a blast7307 on him, and he shall hear8085 a rumor,8052 and shall return7725 to his own land;776 and I will cause him to fall5307 by the sword2719 in his own land.776

8 So the Rab-shakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish.

8 So Rabshakeh7262 returned,7725 and found4672 the king4428 of Assyria804 warring3898 against5921 Libnah:3841 for he had heard8085 that he was departed5265 from Lachish.3923

9 And when he heard it said concerning Tarhak king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against you, he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,

9 And when he heard8085 say559 of Tirhakah8640 king4428 of Ethiopia,3568 Behold,2009 he is come3318 out to fight3898 against you: he sent7971 messengers4397 again7725 to Hezekiah,2396 saying,559

10 Thus shall you say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hands of the king of Assyria.

11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lances by destroying them utterly; and shall you be delivered?

11 Behold,2009 you have heard8085 what853 834 the kings4428 of Assyria804 have done6213 to all3605 lands,776 by destroying2763 them utterly: and shall you be delivered?5337

12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, such as Gozan, Haran, and Rezeph, and the inhabitants of Eden who were in Thelasar?

12 Have the gods430 of the nations1471 delivered5337 them which834 my fathers1 have destroyed;7843 as Gozan,1470 and Haran,2771 and Rezeph,7530 and the children1121 of Eden5731 which834 were in Thelasar?8515

13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of Sepharvim, and of Dena, and Ivah?

13 Where346 is the king4428 of Hamath,2574 and the king4428 of Arpad,774 and the king4428 of the city5892 of Sepharvaim,5617 of Hena,2012 and Ivah?5755

14 And Hezekiah received the letters from the hand of the messengers, and read them; and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD and spread them before the LORD.

14 And Hezekiah2396 received3947 the letter5612 of the hand3027 of the messengers,4397 and read7121 it: and Hezekiah2396 went5927 up into the house1004 of the LORD,3068 and spread6566 it before6440 the LORD.3068

15 And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD and said, O LORD God of Israel, who sits upon the cherubim, thou art the God, even thou alone, over all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made the heaven and the earth.

16 O LORD, incline thine ear and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who hath sent messages to reproach the living God.

17 Of a truth, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,

17 Of a truth,551 LORD,3068 the kings4428 of Assyria804 have destroyed2717 the nations1471 and their lands,776

18 And have burned their gods in fire; for they were no gods, but the works of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have burned them.

18 And have cast5414 their gods430 into the fire:784 for they were no3808 gods,430 but the work4639 of men's120 hands,3027 wood6086 and stone:68 therefore they have destroyed6 them.

19 Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hands, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God, even thou alone.

19 Now6258 therefore, O LORD3068 our God,430 I beseech4994 you, save3467 you us out of his hand,3027 that all3605 the kingdoms4467 of the earth776 may know3045 that you are the LORD3068 God,430 even you only.905

20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says the LORD God of Israel: That which you have prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.

21 This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: The virgin the daughter of Zion despises you and laughs you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head behind you.

22 Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? And against whom have you raised your voices and lifted up your eyes on high? Even against the Holy One of Israel.
